Italian Shopping: Where to Find What You Need

One of the main issues when travelling abroad is 'Where can I buy this stuff?". Each country has its own habits regarding the shopping.
Here you can find the Italian ones and our 'Store's names'.

TABACCAIO: this is the store that sells cigarettes and stamps. All these stores also have chewing gums, batteries, and are also stationery shops. In many of these now you can play to the Scratch and Win and other lotteries.

ALIMENTARI: they are little shops where you can find the main foodstuffs. Usually pasta and all different kind of food, cheese, cold cuts and bread.


FRUTTIVENDOLO or ORTOFRUTTA: shop selling fruit and vegetables.

SUPERMERCATO: a supermarket selling mainly food and household products. The most famous ones are "Coop" and "Conad-Leclerc", "Sigma", "Esselunga".

DISCOUNT:  a cheap supermarket. The most famous are "Lidl", "Dipiù", "Auchan"

IPERMERCATO: a mall with many shops and a central supermarket area where you can also find electronic goods.

FORNO: all kind of bread and different kind of "focaccia"; usually they also have sweet cakes.

PASTICCERIA: the Dessert's House

GELATERIA: the Ice cream's House

EDICOLA: usually a kiosk, selling newspapers and magazines.

Hey, it takes about 10-20 minutes to learn those words by walking on the streets.

I though I would have found some useful information here...
